Stay home and shop online. You’re too pretty to have to look for a parking spot. – Anonymous
One of my best sources of building up my airline miles or hotel points is using gift cards and one of the best places for those is GiftCardMall.com. I sign up for a new credit card and have to meet the minimum spend without actually buying stuff is to use the manufacture spending method with gift cards to money orders. If you’re curious about how this is done I’ll explain how I do this.
I previously posted a bit about how we traveled to Peru and how I earned the miles to get us there in Business Class or better. The process is to take advantage of the various travel rewards credit card sign up bonus. This is where you build up enough miles or points to travel in a bit more comfort. I mean, really, who doesn’t mind the extra room on a long flight?
GiftCardMall.com has a huge variety of retail gift cards! They offer most everything and the ease of going through their site is a no brainer. I’ve used their site for personal gift cards as well as for gift giving.
Starting with small steps
While some credit card companies have now included and are enforcing the restrictions. It’s still possible to get a few travel branded credit cards that can help you on your bucket list type holidays. Here are basic steps:
- Start with the destination before you do anything else. This will guide you to which card(s) to research. Credit cards partner with certain airlines and not every airline flies where you may want to go.
- Research the credit cards. While some banks partner with airlines and brand their cards they may also have other cards that offer points. These points can be transferred to airlines.
- Get the card. Once you get the card the options for meeting the minimum spend are all over the place.
- Spend and build. This is where it typically takes a bit of time. Best to plan your trip out in the future so you can get the points you want.
- Wash, Rinse, Repeat. After a bit of time you just start the process all over again.
Ok, maybe it’s not all the details but there are the basic. But if you want to know more keep reading!
There are several different venues for shopping for gift cards online. What I do is start with those cash back type websites, e.g. rakuten.com. Sign up for a free account and use their links to get to GiftCardMall.com. Rakuten will offer a small percentage on every purchase you make through their site. It’s not much, but it helps offset the expense. Once you build up enough on Rakuten you can get a check mailed to you!
My favorite and most dependable method is to purchase Visa gift cards from GiftCardMall.com and convert those into money orders at WalMart money centers. I’ve managed to get plenty of miles and points through this process. There are some pros and cons to this all. It’s not easy, if it was everyone would be doing it. The risks are there, but it’s up to you how you want to manage this.
I know there are many other options when it comes to buying gift cards. They’re at every check out line in any store or gas station. You can pick them up at office supply stores, too. They are convenient and offer that impulse buying satisfaction. But going through Rakuten or other e-commerce sites to get to gift card sellers does offer the luxury of shopping from your sofa in your pajamas.
The pay off
We’ve been able to get to many great and fun trips over the last 5 years with me taking small risks. We’re not greedy nor do we want to break the process and ruin it. But if you’re up for some comfortable travel and want to know more drop me a line. I’ll be happy to answer your questions with my own experiences.
